Thanet has one of the most beautiful coastlines and we are doing more to attract visitors to it this year, particularly those whose budgets have been stretched by the economic squeeze and who are opting to stay at home.

Johnny Lewis

I spend a lot of time on the clifftops around the island when I am out running and taking part in charity events like the autumn cycle ride for the heart foundation - and I know and love much of our seaside walks.

It was really brought home to me at the recent air day at Palm Bay how fortunate we are to have a natural stage like this to showcase such a spectacular event - the clifftop site is perfect for the Big Event and the air display was terrific to watch from that setting.

So once again I say to the people who like to have a little moan about Thanet, take a rain check and actually look at what is around you, investigate the numerous small and large-scale events that are laid on by hard-working individuals indoors and outdoors pretty much all-year round.

There is plenty of entertainment on offer to suit all tastes. How many of you have visited our splendid natural history museum at Quex House and explored the grounds or the manor house? It is another example of a great Thanet location that really needs to be seen and I would thoroughly recommend anyone, resident or visitor, to get along and find out about our history and heritage, and have a lot at the rare exhibits.

And while I am talking about visitors to our area, please, please make sure you take your litter home with you or use the bins provided on our proms, beaches, parks, gardens and visitor attractions. There’s no excuse for letting litter spoil our lovely area.

Catch up with Johnny every weekday and Saturday from 6am to 10am and every Sunday on The Vinyl years from 7pm.
