The latest round of repairs to a children’s playground where equipment has repeatedly been set on fire will cost more than £20,000 to repair.

The site at Warre Rec in Ramsgate has been targeted twice over the past year and it means youngsters have been forced to use another park.

The playground has been destroyed by yobs on two occasions, in October last year and again in April.

There was damage to playground flooring as well as setting fire to play equipment.

More than £25,000 was spent in October to repair the equipment.

And estimates indicate the latest vandalism will set Thanet District Council back a further £21,000 to repair – bringing the total to £46,000.

Shocking pictures show the aftermath of fires at the playground, which shows equipment which has been melted and blackened by the blazes.

Cllr Steve Albon (Lab), cabinet member for cleansing and coastal services, said: “I am disappointed that this children’s playground has been vandalised again.

“The actions of a small minority spoil the facilities for the local communities who should be able to enjoy them safely.”

The council is looking at different options for the provision of play facilities in that area.

It says part of the plan is to reduce the likelihood of further vandalism.

Signs have been installed to direct people to the nearest alternative playground. This is in Ellington Park, which is a five-minute walk away.

Members of the public should report instances of vandalism or anti-social behaviour via TDC’s website.

The local authority could not confirm how long the work will take to complete and when the park would reopen.
