Controversial parking fees at council-owned seasonal car parks in a coastal town could be reduced following a backlash from residents and businesses.

Thanet District Council (TDC) wants to lower the charge for the first hour of parking at selected sites by £1.50, bringing the cost down to £2.50 if the proposals are accepted by full council next month.

The controversial £4 charge for the first hour in peak season sparked an 829-signature petition earlier this year, with concerns about the impact such prices would have on tourism.

The changes would apply at the following car parks:

• Albion Street, Broadstairs

• Marina Esplanade, Ramsgate

• Chandos Square, Broadstairs

• Joss Bay, Broadstairs

• Dreamland, Margate

Outlining a series of proposed changes to costs and fees for all services provided by TDC, cabinet member for financial services and estates Cllr Ian Gregory (Con) said the average rise stood at 2%.

He added: “Although it’s always a difficult decision to put forward any increases in charges, it’s important to note a number of charges have actually been reduced.

“Following feedback from residents, parking hourly rates in Joss Bay, Chandos Square, Minnis Bay, and St Mildred’s Bay have been reduced.

“Many other fees remain unchanged from last year.”
