After weeks of build-up and a £15,000 fundraiser, Paula the polar bear will be coming to Margate this week.

The much anticipated puppet will be making its first appearance on Thursday outside the Turner Contemporary.

The life-size polar bear will roam the streets for five weeks - on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

A spokesman for the Turner Comtemporary said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Greenpeace, our partner on this project, who are lending Paula to the gallery.

"Come and inspire your family, and experience what it feels like to stand next to a polar bear.

"Paula the polar bear will surprise visitors to Margate, and encourage thought provoking conversations about climate change and how much can co-exist with animals.

"It will be the first - and possibly the last - time that a polar bear has been seen in Margate."

The puppet is coming to town thanks to the 292 funders who donated to the campaign to bring Paula to town.

It comes as part of the gallery's summer exhibition, Animals & Us.

Paula the polar bear has already travelled to Washington DC, Finland and Auckland to raise awareness of environmental issues.
