A fire that spread to nearby homes and prompted a rescue mission to save two dogs was started deliberately, detectives believe.

Police have launched a probe into the suspected arson in Tomlin Drive, Margate, at 5.35pm yesterday.

Four fire engines were called to the scene after the flames had moved from a garden shed to a number of properties.

Crews fought to extinguish the blaze for almost four hours - but now officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a possible arson and want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious.

"People who were driving in the area at the time of the fire and have dashcam footage are also encouraged to get in touch."

After arriving at the incident yesterday, crews searched one of the affected premises as there were fears people were still inside.

But officials confirmed everyone had been accounted for.

They added: "Two dogs were also rescued.

"Several people were treated by paramedics for the effects of breathing in smoke."
