A man who staged a 24-hour rooftop protest in Margate earlier this week has been charged with assaulting three police officers including intending to cause one grievous bodily harm.

Artur Napierkowski appeared at Medway Magistrates Court yesterday via video link charged with 14 offences.

The 30-year-old of Northdown Road, Cliftonville, was arrested after police were called following reports that a man had climbed onto the top of a building on the corner of Ethelbert Road at 2.18am on Monday morning.

Napierkowski is charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Edward Poole with intent to do him grievous bodily harm and assaulting Ben Rabey and Mark Haughton with intent to resist arrest.

Mr Poole was taken to hospital after the incident but has since been released.

Police spokesman Scarlet Jones said: "The officer has been released from hospital and his welfare is being managed."

Napierkowski is due to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on April 7.

The other charges he faces are possession of cocaine, assault, affray, making threats to kill, criminal damage to a roof, window and skylight, criminal damage to a property in Northdown Road, criminal damage to a window, three counts of criminal damage to cars, and theft of a laptop and mobile phone.
