A highways inquiry has been promised to campaigners who are continuing their fight for improved road safety around Broadstairs schools into 2014.
South Thanet MP Laura Sandys said the pressure group had taken ‘a major step forward’ after setting up a meeting with Cllr David Brazier, Kent County Council cabinet member for highways.
She said: “I was very pleased Cllr Brazier came to discuss the issues that local students, teachers, residents and parents face day in, day out. He took our concerns seriously and has pledged to undertake an inquiry to help find us the best solutions.
“The council has also committed to organising a workshop with students to look at their concerns in detail and ensure that they are actively involved in addressing the issues.
“The pupils of Bromstone Primary School, The Charles Dickens School, Dane Court Grammar School and Upton Junior School have done a superb job in raising awareness about their campaign to reduce speed, improve signs, increase the number of safe crossing areas, and tackle dangerous parking.
“Students collected 1517 signatures for their petition that was received by Kent County Council and reported to Thanet Joint Transportation Board.
“With more than 5000 students attending schools in approximately a mile radius, improving road safety will have enormous benefits. This meeting marked an important and major step forward.”
