A Wetherspoon pub will reopen next month following a half-a-million pound refurbishment.

The Mechanical Elephant, which opened on the Margate seafront in 2001, is undergoing an extensive refit and redecoration.

It is set to show off its new look for the first time on Tuesday, June 11.

The upstairs bar has been removed to create a larger customer area, with additional seating installed on the first floor, offering views over the beach.

There is a new colour scheme and additional artwork has been created and is on display.

A new bespoke carpet, reflecting the history of The Mechanical Elephant, has been made and fitted throughout the pub.

The toilets have also been completely refurbished and redecorated, while brand new staff facilities have been installed behind the scenes.

Pub manager Matthew Cole said: “Wetherspoon has spent almost £500,000 on The Mechanical Elephant, providing further investment into the town and offering improved facilities for customers and staff.

“Me and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers back into the pub and are confident that they will be impressed by the refurbishment of the building.”

The refurbishment follows the opening of the Royal Victoria Pavillion in Ramsgate in 2017 as part of a £4 million development.
