A teacher died after becoming ill on holiday in Egypt, an inquest opening has heard.

Alison Sonnex, who had taught at Dane Court grammar school in Broadstairs since 1995, was taken to hospital along with her husband during their break in April.

Although he recovered, Ms Sonnex deteriorated and ended up in an intensive care unit, dying on April 12.

Head teacher Andrew Fowler paid to tribute to Ms Sonnex, 54, who he called a "gifted linguist".

"Ms Sonnex had taught at Dane Court since 1995, in the language department and as the school's coordinator of special educational needs," he said.
"We do not yet have full details confirmed, but we understand that Mss Sonnex died suddenly whilst on holiday.
"The school community is shocked by Alison's death.

"Our thoughts are with Ms Sonnex's husband and her family.

"Ms Sonnex was a gifted linguist, teaching Italian, German and French."

At an opening last Wednesday at The Archbishop's Palace in Maidstone, post mortem results gave the cause of death as unascertained.

The hearing was adjourned until Wednesday, September 19.
