Demolition day for the landmark Richborough towers and chimney is drawing close – with unconfirmed sources suggesting the big bang may take place on Sunday, March 11.

Contractors DDS from Monkton say it will take around 60 seconds for the structures to be reduced to dust and rubble. Roads will be closed and an exclusion zone set up around the towers on the A256, with the blast expected to be between 8.30am and 9.30am.

The towers were built in the 1950s and the power station opened in 1962, burning coal dug in the Kent Coalfield. It was decommissioned in 1996.

Meanwhile, the Monkey Cage Art Gallery at the boating pool in Royal Esplanade, Ramsgate, is calling for residents to come forward with any kind of artwork that involves their memories of the towers for a 10-day exhibition, to run from Saturday, March 24, until April 1.
