Travellers occupying Jackey Baker's in Ramsgate were evicted this afternoon only to show up in a new camp at Dane Park in Margate.

Witnesses say 30 caravans arrived at the beauty spot within the space of an hour at around 5pm.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I've contacted the police but they said that nothing can be done.

"They said it's down to the landlords, which is the council, so it could be weeks and weeks.

"There is due to be a big juniors football tournament on at the weekend which might have to be cancelled.

"It's a beautiful park with lots of activities, its enormous, but they are taking it all.

"There are more and more turning up, it's like the apocalypse."

It is understood travellers began leaving the park at 7.30pm.

However, messages sent in to KentOnline later suggested the group had turned up in Herne Bay and were occupying the Memorial Park.

A police spokesman had earlier said: "Officers are currently assisting with the eviction of travellers on land off New Haine Road, Ramgate."

The group have now been moved from the site, having moved onto the field last Friday - within a day of another encampment leaving.

This morning, Cllr Lin Fairbrass, Deputy Leader of Thanet District Council and Cabinet Member for Community Services said: "Officers from our Community Safety Team visited the site on Friday (23 June) and after carrying out the appropriate welfare checks issued the travellers with a direction to leave.

"A further site visit on Monday morning showed that the travellers are still at the location.

"As a result, we will be taking the next steps and applying to the court to request a possession order of the land to then evict those present unlawfully.

"This is the legal process that the council has to follow with each incursion."

The problem had become so bad that a local councillor, who claims his wife was called a “stinking *****” in one confrontation, had said “enough is enough”.

Cllr Stuart Piper spent time clearing up rubbish from one part of the field where piles of waste are building up.

He had numerous calls from local residents complaining about the travellers, who allegedly also used woods at the site as a toilet.
