Travellers have pitched up next to a children's play area in Margate.

Several caravans arrived onto the green beside Viking Adventure Playground in Ethelbert Crescent, Cliftonville, yesterday.

Officers from Thanet District Council's community safety team are planning to visit the site today to "carry out necessary welfare checks".

A spokesman said:"If there are no welfare concerns a section 77 order will be issued."

Section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 gives the council authority to order people living in vehicles to move off public land, a highway, unoccupied land or land where there is no permission for them to stay.

Travellers can be prosecuted if they return to the same piece of land within three months of a section 77 order being issued.
