Heartbroken family and friends have paid tribute to a "kind, loving" 22-year-old following his sudden death.

Benjamin Taylor, from Birchington, died in hospital days after being found in a critical condition near Herne Bay railway station.

His death is not thought to be suspicious.

Benjamin's loved ones are now raising money for his funeral and for mental health charity CALM.

Close childhood friend James Collins says he is "shocked and gutted" following the death of the former King Ethelbert School and Thanet College pupil.

"He was kind, loving, he was always laughing," said James. "He was always such a happy person."

Benjamin was discovered near Herne Bay station on February 19 and rushed to hospital.

But medics were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead on February 23.

The skilled plasterer lived in Birchington with his mum, step-dad, sister and beloved springer spaniel Molly. He also leaves behind his father and older brother.

Mum Melanie Megson said: "Benjamin was a very integral part of our extended family.

"His death has really badly affected everyone – the youngest to the oldest.

"His cousin's broken, he's just devastated, because they grew up like twins. They were the same age. Throughout the years they did everything together."

She describes her son as a "very cheeky" young man, who was "always striving to make things better for himself and others".

Since Benjamin's death, his family have been inundated with flowers and messages from those whose lives he touched – from fellow dog walkers, to people he met through work.

"He was an incredible plasterer and he worked hard," said Melanie. "I've had strangers knocking on the door with flowers and a card saying 'Benjamin did a job for me – he did an excellent job, such a lovely young man, so polite'.

"He always walked the dog at Crispe Park and people that befriended him there have planted flowers for him.

"I don't think he can be replaced, not for anybody."

James, a close friend of Benjamin's since the age of 10, has set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs of Benjamin's funeral.

"Ben was a very giving and amazing person and we want to give him the best send off possible," he said.

The Gofundme page has already raised nearly £3,000 and any excess funds will go to charity CALM.
