Pictures showed a vehicle appeared to have struck a lamppost on the crossing point, causing damage to its front bumper.

Police attended, with motorists being diverted around the van.

Resident Mick Cairns spotted the vehicle as police arrived at the scene and said: “I was only passing by when the tow truck turned up and the police were holding the traffic both ways.

“It had happened at least half an hour before I got there. The traffic was way back to Lord of the Manor [building] and up the other way to St Lawrence.”

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: “Kent Police was made aware at 2.17pm that a car had collided with a traffic island in Canterbury Road East near to Kendal Close in Ramsgate.

“Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and a man was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“The road was closed while crews responded to the incident and has since reopened.”
