Wetland birds that visit the Thanet coastline during the winter could be struggling to survive weeks of bracing temperatures.

Nature conservation bodies, including the RSPB, are so concerned they have urged birdwatchers, walkers, anglers and water sports enthusiasts to minimise disturbance to ducks, geese, swans and wading birds.

It is the first time in more than 10 years that such a warning has been issued in England.

Dr Mark Avery, conservation director for the RSPB, said: "During freezing conditions disturbance forces the birds to squander precious energy reserves by taking flight when they need to spend as much time as possible feeding.

"We hope everyone who uses and visits the countryside will heed our advice, giving the many species of birds a better chance of survival."

Experts also warned that feeding bread to waterfowl can be counter-productive as it fills their stomachs without providing the nutrients they need to maintain energy and remain healthy.
