Work on the former Pleasurama site on Ramsgate’s seafront will start on Monday.

Repairs to the cliff behind the Royal Sands site are taking place before the wider development of the site begins.

The work will last an estimated 12 weeks and be completed in October.

During the repairs scaffolding will go up on the cliffs and fencing will be placed on the upper promenade.

Thanet District Council is funding the cliff works through the money it received from the sale of the site.

Developers Cardy have delayed starting work on the main project until the end of the summer season to keep disruption to tourism to a minimum.

Cardy took over control of the site from SFP Ventures UK which had secured planning permission in 2004 but failed to put the scheme in place.

Cabinet member for estates Cllr John Townend said: “The commencement of cliff works next week marks the beginning of a new era for this project.

“Cardy have shown sensitivity and consideration by deciding not to commence work before the summer season to keep local disruption to a minimum.

“I look forward to them starting development work later in the year and watching the scheme begin to take shape.”

The Royal Sands scheme will include a 60-bed hotel, 107 residential apartments, leisure facilities, cafes, shops and a playground.

It is expected to employ up to 200 people while under development and once completed, it will provide further jobs in the hotel trade and commercial units.
