'Neo-Nazi’ 'White Lives Matter' group march today in Margate

The UK’s first “White Lives Matter” march is expected today in Margate organised by a Kent far right group.

The extremist East Kent English Patriots – whose members were also involved in the Dover protests – will march in the town on Saturday.

Thanet Stand Up to Racism has branded White Lives Matter a racist organisation and plans to oppose the march.

And the Kent Anti-racism Network has called on its members to “come together and stand to ensure this hateful march does not pass.”

Thanet Says No To Racism said the White Lives Matter march will stir up racial tension in Margate.

The group said in a statement: “The group behind this march are the Neo Nazi South East Alliance who consistently post White Power articles and images and from time to time feature posts in favour of Adolf Hitler.”

Also taking place on Saturday is music festival Margate Rocks Against Racism, which organisers hope will celebrate diversity and promote mutual respect.

Organiser Kaz Peet said: “Through the power of music and the impact of people coming together, it is our intention to overcome the hateful and divisive message of the white supremacist group White Lives Matter.

“The event will take place on the same day as the Neo-Nazi march, not in conflict or as confrontation, but to offer an essential and inclusive, beacon of light, and safety in the community at that time.”

Police spokesman Sally Smith said: “We are aware of a march taking place on Saturday, October 22, from Margate railway station.

“We are also aware of a music event being held on the same day in area.

“We have a legal obligation to enable peaceful protest and have a great deal of experience in planning for and facilitating of such events.

“Anyone travelling to the area with the intent of committing an offence should be aware that officers will be proactive in taking action against those who do not act lawfully.

“We would ask all people, both locals and visitors, to support Kent Police in keeping Margate peaceful on Saturday.”
