Arrest in Kent after man ‘raped in Brighton street’

A manhunt after the reported rape of a teenager in Brighton has seen a suspect arrested in Kent.

The 42-year-old man from Chessington, Kingston-Upon-Thomas, was apprehended in Ramsgate on Boxing Day.

It comes after a 19-year-old man was reportedly approached by two individuals near Harry Ramsdens - a popular fish and chip shop - in the early hours of December 21.

It is alleged he was then raped in nearby Steine Lane shortly afterwards.

The victim managed to seek help from a passer-by, who called police.

He continues to receive support from specialist officers as the investigation progresses.

In Surrey, a 40-year-old man from Redhill was also arrested on suspicion of rape.

They both remain in police custody at this time.

The reported attack happened in The Lanes - a trendy Brighton neighbourhood popular with tourists.

Detective inspector Sean Booth said: “These arrests were a direct result of excellent work from our dedicated team of staff, officers and the public.

“We are still urging anyone with information about this incident to contact police online, or by calling 101, quoting Operation Attach.”
