Margate were undone by two set pieces as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Canvey Island in the Ryman League Premier Division on Saturday.
The first came on 20 minutes when Kevin Dobinson curled a free-kick into the top corner after John Keister had been penalised for a foul on the edge of the area.
The advantage was doubled on the half hour when Dobinson netted from the penalty spot after a handball.
Joe Healy should have halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time but he blazed over from 12 yards.
Margate came into the match more after the break but couldn't find a breakthrough, despite Akwasi Edusei going close.
