A dedicated Ramsgate care team has been shortlisted for two national awards by deafblind charity Sense.
The Sense Ramsgate team has been nominated in the “team of the year” and “quality” categories for their extraordinary dedication.
This relates to the way they have supported people with visual and hearing impairments at the Sense Ramsgate home, enabling them to live active and independent lives.
The team will find out if they have won at a special ceremony in London on September 30 hosted by Strictly Come Dancing star Karen Hardy.
Home manager Jill Liddle said: “I can’t praise my staff team enough for their extraordinary dedication and resourcefulness in finding new ways to support both deafblind people and their own peers.
“Recently one of our residents in the home developed health problems and the staff worked long hours supporting him at the hospital - ensuring he had the best advocates to communicate with all healthcare professionals, as his communication and care needs are very unique due to his dual sensory loss.
“There were a lot of adjustments that needed to be made in the house because of the huge change in his health needs and the staff have coped with all of this unbelievably well. Everyone pulled together to make sure that the atmosphere in the house stayed happy, upbeat and productive for the rest of the residents and continued to come up with ideas to make things better all of us.“
The nomination recognises the team’s “person-centred” approach, adapted to the individual needs and aspirations of deafblind people. This approach has enabled them to make informed choices about how they wish to live their lives for more than eight years, since the home opened.
