Fresh designs showing how a harbour could benefit from a £19.8m overhaul in a bid to boost the economy have emerged.

Architects first unveiled their vision for an enhanced community centre, port and harbour facilities for Military Road in Ramsgate last July.

Now, new designs of what the “green campus” project - one of Thanet District Council’s flagship schemes - could look like will go on display to the public from today.

Located on an open site within the Port of Ramsgate, it is hoped the green campus will create facilities for training, enterprise and light industry housed within eco-friendly buildings and open spaces.

TDC hopes these will put Ramsgate residents in a position to benefit from forthcoming major economic opportunities with the town not seeing any net job growth over the last 10 years.

The proposal for the green campus is for it to be centred around a “sociable, south-facing courtyard to foster collaboration and interchange”.

It will consist of a two to three-storey unit which will house training and seminar spaces and a communal canteen fronting Military Road.

The block would overlook a small arrival yard at the north east corner and give access to the rear yard, which is sheltered from the prevailing south west wind.

There will also be two workspace buildings and a ‘terrace’ of small-footprint workspaces.

The eastern building will include a larger double-height space and a range of unit sizes.

The buildings are designed around a consistent structural module to allow for combination or partitioning as needed to accommodate emerging business needs.

The proposals say: “The green campus will be a self-sufficient destination for enterprise and skills development. At the same time, its arrangement establishes an open, flexible core to attract future investment and expansion.”

Developers also say the project will be environmentally friendly and fully electric with no gas supply.

“Cycle parking and EV charging infrastructure will encourage sustainable travel to the site,” the proposals add.

Thanet District Council (TDC) is now inviting members of the public to learn more about the designs as they go on show this week.

A public exhibition of the designs will take place at Arch 6, Military Road, Ramsgate CT11 9LG from 2pm until 7pm today, Thursday from 2pm until 5pm and Friday from 9.30am until 12pm.

There will be a number of boards on display showing the designs. The project architects and project management team will be there today to answer questions. The council’s project team will attend all three sessions.

Following the event, the boards will remain on display at the Military Road venue and can be viewed during two further sessions, on Tuesday, May 7, 2pm – 4pm and Thursday, May 9, 9am – 11am.

TDC was awarded £19.8 million for Ramsgate in October 2021, through the government’s Levelling Up Fund.

In addition to the green campus, the funding is supporting projects to create a Green Port with improved infrastructure and becoming a “centre of excellence for zero carbon maritime logistics and renewable energy”.

Alongside the port, there are also proposals for a new town square in Ramsgate Harbour, new uses for heritage buildings, and community hubs in Newington and Ramsgate town centre.
