Freewheeling trains, UFOs, and a recycled tortoise - just another week of the weird and wonderful goings on in Thanet.
At kmfm we talked about how train drivers have been told to cut their engines when they go downhill to save money - sounds like fun, freewheeling like the old Dreamland roller coaster. Next they will be asking us to do it in our cars to save fuel - just think, freewheeling down the Paragon! You never know.
Stranger things may happen - and they did when dozens of listeners phoned in with reports of odd lights in the sky over Broadstairs and St Peter’s. One explanation is that they were fire lanterns used for festivals and parties, but others are still not so certain. As Mulder and Sculley say, the truth is out there - somewhere.
Meanwhile, Thanet council now have 27 members of staff who can dish out on the spot fines for litter dropping, dog fouling and parking offences. I don’t know about you, but I’ll want to see some ID before I hand any dosh to a Tom, Dick or Harry. Not that I ever do anything wrong!
We are always keen to support the development of local music and this week Audioshock from Sandwich Technology School visited our studios for a chat about their new CD. They sound a little like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2. The boys are aged 15 and 17, and we think they might go far.
kmfm also told you about Fred the tortoise from Margate, who got thrown out accidentally with the rubbish, but there was a happy ending as he was found safe and well at a tip in Canterbury after a long search.
Plus we learnt that the Thanet Earth Project near Monkton has uncovered a few surprises including the skeletal remains of some former Thanet residents who lived and worked here many hundreds of years ago.
And after the sighting on the A28 at the weekend of a wallaby, what’s the strangest thing you’ve seen on the county’s roads? Kate in Sandwich told breakfast presenter Johnny Lewis how she was startled by two elephants on the Whitstable bends many years ago - mind you, at the time there was a circus pitched nearby. Bit of a shock, nonetheless.
And finally - I am still searching for a name for this column. Don’t be shy, send your suggestions to me and we will let you know the best offerings before making a decision.
Until next time, enjoy yourselves - Spencer.
