Council tenants evicted for rent arrears

SIX Thanet council housing tenants have recently been evicted from their homes after owing a total of £10,952.14 in rent arrears. Since January, the council has evicted 61 tenants for owing £118,850.89, and a further 120 tenants in arrears face the threat of possession proceedings.

Council leader Cllr Richard Nicholson, said: “The council takes no pleasure in announcing these evictions, but we have a duty to the majority of tenants who are responsible and pay their rent. Council housing is in great demand, and we cannot allow a minority of tenants to flout their responsibilities and refuse to meet obligations.

“Evictions are a last resort. Our debt management unit has officers who are more than willing to help and advise those experiencing genuine financial difficulties. If any one feels they cannot cope, or that debt is looming, we can help to find a solution and avoid the threat of eviction.”
