Margate's reputation as a top culinary destination has been given a boost with six restaurants named in the Good Food Guide.
Seafood bistro Angela's are winners of the editor's award for sustainability impressing with their partnership with Windmill Community Gardens in Dane Valley.
The kitchen team uses their own composting machine to reduce the amount of waste that might otherwise end up in landfill and to produce more raw and organic ingredients to use in the restaurant.
Elizabeth Carter, editor of The Good Food Guide by Waitrose & Partners said: ‘Margate has undergone an impressive revival in recent years, and its food scene is right at the forefront.
"With so many small, independent, affordable places to eat – an impressive six are listed in The Good Food Guide – you’re spoiled for choice.
"But Angela’s stands out. By working directly with local growers, fishermen and suppliers, and by extracting maximum value from every single ingredient, this tiny restaurant ensures that almost nothing is wasted. What’s more, it all tastes great."
Lee Coad, co-owner of Angela’s, said: ‘We are incredibly honoured to have received the Best for Sustainability Award for 2019. All of us at Angela's are passionate about the issues that affect both our changing environment and the people that farm our land and fish our seas.
"So it seemed only natural to make sure our little seafood restaurant by the sea is a business that cares for both the planet and people. We certainly feel that small differences we make in our community can have a big impact. Small is beautiful, but it should be the future of sustainability too.
"Windmill Community Garden is an incredible organisation that helps out-of-work people gain confidence and helps with their lives through being outside. We bought a huge composter for our waste and every morning Charlotte takes it to the gardens and it's used for compost which helps grow some of the vegetables that we use in the restaurant so we close the loop."
Rob Cooper, head chef and co-owner, says their menu is constantly changing according to what is available from their regional suppliers . "We only get what the day brings in essentially (from fishing boats). We are creating a menu of what we buy in, which creates a certain amount of freedom but it's great, it really focusses us; rather than try and do everything and maybe get a bit muddled what our ethos is to strip it back with a blackboard menu, and what we have is five starters and five mains - it keeps it fresh our regulars come in and they don't have the same thing every day."
Another Margate gem to make the guide's main list is Italian restaurant Bottega Caruso. Located in the Old Town it has won rave reviews for its authentic cuisine after starting out life in the Old Kent Market and steadily building a reputation for using high-quality ingredients from southern Italy.
Other restaurants listed in the Local Gems category are celebrated seafood cafe, Hantverk & Found; town stalwarts, GB Pizza and the Greedy Cow.
The Kentish Pantry makes it onto the list this for the first time this year winning around foodies with their bistro.
Broadstairs also represented the isle with newcomer Stark also making the main list. The tiny fine dining restaurant offers a seasonal tasting menu that showcases the skills of Ben Crittenden. Albarino tapas restaurant also makes the list for which they have been on every year since 2011.
