Residents unable to sleep in Newington as alarm continues to ring almost a week on

A "deafening" tower block alarm which has been ringing for almost a week is causing residents to lose sleep and making animals anxious.

The piercing sound from Staner Court in Manston Road, Newington, can be heard about a mile away continuously blaring throughout the day.

Residents have complained to Thanet District Council about the noise in the area and one councillor has urged the local authority to fix the problem "as a matter of urgency".

One neighbour of the complex, who did not want to be named, said the noise started sounding on Tuesday last week.

"The alarm is still going off and it is deafening," they said.

"It has been going on since last Tuesday from the block and it is really loud and waking up everyone’s kids.

"My daughter gets the bus home from Ramsgate Railway Station and that is about a mile away and she can hear it."

The resident told how the alarm has sounded before, but this was resolved within a day.

"My ears are ringing when I’m not even near it and it has been going for a week now," they added.

"I am right next to the block of flats. The animals are scared. I’ve got a cat that is scared to go out. We can’t sleep and it is causing a lot of disturbance."

The resident told how the alarm appears to be coming from Staner Court but she does not know what the source is and why it is sounding.

Newington councillor Rick Everitt (Lab) said: "I have not previously been made aware of this problem by residents but, now that I have been by [KentOnline], I have raised it with officers to address as a matter of urgency.

"Clearly the situation as described is not acceptable."

A Thanet District Council spokesperson said: "We have not received any complaints about an alarm sounding at Staner Court in Ramsgate.

"Having investigated, the alarm is the property of a resident and is not the Staner Court fire alarm.

"As we have concerns regarding the resident’s welfare, we have made contact with the relevant agencies, and will continue to seek appropriate support.

"Our intention is to deal with the alarm using the legal options available to us."
