New organisers of one of Kent’s biggest fireworks displays, which was going to be postponed, have announced this year’s event has been cancelled for good.
The team behind Quex Park Bonfire and Fireworks in Birchington shared a statement on social media that “after careful consideration” it cannot find a new date for the spectacle to take place this year.
Apologising for the inconvenience, organisers pledged to be back “stronger than ever” next year to offer the “best and safest event in 2024”.
Thousands were expected at the venue yesterday, with the new team behind it saying on Friday it was aiming to put on a good show despite the poor weather.
But, yesterday it announced the decision to postpone the fireworks had been made in the interest of public safety.
However, not long after this announcement, “devastated” organisers apologised and said the display would not go ahead, adding ticket holders can expect a full refund.
“We’re very sorry today didn’t happen as planned,” the post shared yesterday night began.
“After careful consideration, we are unable to offer a new date for this event in the near future. Therefore, we will be issuing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets.
“As a team and an event family, we are truly devastated that we were unable to deliver the event that we dreamed of.
“We understand your frustration at the timing of the announcement, but we were trying everything to deliver a safe event with as little disruption as possible, but in the end, this could not be done.
“We will be back stronger than ever and will try to give you the best and safest event in 2024.”
Many organisers of fireworks displays have been faced with making the difficult decision to call off events across the county after wet and windy weather battered Kent over the past few days.
Tonbridge Fireworks Display announced this evening’s spectacle would be pushed back due to flooding.
A spokesman for the event said: "Unfortunately due to recent heavy rain, Tonbridge park is partially flooded.”
The display at Tonbridge Park will now take place on Sunday, November 19.
Yesterday, Ashford Rugby Club also announced its display would be postponed while The Hook and Hatchet Inn in Hucking, near Maidstone, also cancelled its event for Saturday.
The event at Palace Farm in Doddington near Sittingbourne was also called off because "organisers feel that it was unsafe to proceed with the event".
