Fire at Invicta House in Millmead Road, Margate, caused by discarded cigarette

A fire in a tower block, sparked by a discarded cigarette, saw smoke rise to the 14th floor.

The blaze was reported in a bin on the ground floor of Invicta House in Millmead Road, Margate, just after 7pm yesterday.

It triggered the sprinkler system which did suppress the blaze. But light smoke had reached the 14th floor.

Four fire engines and a height vehicle were sent.

The fire is thought to have been accidental and it’s believed was started by someone disposing of a cigarette that wasn't properly put out. There were no injuries.

Firefighters have now urged smokers to properly extinguish their cigarettes and tobacco.

A spokesperson said: "Poorly disposed cigarettes and tobacco often lead to fires that can have devastating consequences.

"For advice on smoking safely in your home please the KFRS website."
