Fireworks frustration as many stuck in gridlock miss display at Viking Bay in Broadstairs

Fireworks fans have been left disappointed after a town descended into gridlock as hundreds headed to a seafront display.

Broadstairs Family Firework Night was set to light up the skies last night from Viking Bay, but many locals gave up and turned around before even reaching the event.

The free display, organised by Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council (BSPTC), started at 6pm last night, but crowds were invited to arrive from 5pm to watch rock band The SuperMicks at the bandstand above the bay.

However, many say they were left frustrated by how difficult it was to reach the event, with some even heading home rather than waiting in traffic.

Paul Castle commented on social media: “I think it was very poorly organised; 6pm is crazy.

“So many genuine families missed out, especially young children.

“Thanet was gridlocked by residents trying to get home from work and to the fireworks.

“Whoever came up with 6pm needs to have a serious conversation with themselves. I appreciate that it is free, but it is very disappointing.”

Another added: “We were stuck in the traffic, missed the fireworks, so went to Toby Carvery instead.”

Sam Thomson commented: “Worst experience ever, never ever again.”

After enduring the gridlock, some also called for more than one fireworks event in Thanet next year to avoid the same problem.

Ria Barnes commented: “ We managed it (just). We gave ourselves an hour and a half to get from Margate to Broadstairs, and it still wasn’t enough time.

“If Margate and Ramsgate did their own event, then there would not be the need for the whole of Thanet to descend on Broadstairs; great fireworks, though.”

However, some residents chose to look on the bright side, praising the event despite the traffic woes.

Noemi Osbourne said: “They told everyone that the roads were going to be closed and that it would be busy, and 6pm is actually a brilliant time for schoolchildren.

“It was super busy down on the seafront, with loads of happy families, and it was great to see such a good police presence.

“The fireworks were outstanding so really well done to the organisers; a great display and a fantastic time for all.”

Bemi Dempsey added: “Brilliant fireworks, but so many cars turned up too late for them and gridlocked all of central Broadstairs.”

The organisers, Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council (BSPTC), said the event's timing was brought forward due to comments last year about children being unable to attend because of the later start time.

The council also attempted to dissuade drivers from taking their cars to the event, encouraging the use of public transport in the area due to road closures for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Complications from the earlier start time are set to be discussed at the next BSPTC meeting.

Town Mayor, Cllr Mike Garner, added: “We know this popular free-to-attend event always attracts large crowds, and we do all in our power to ensure everyone enjoys the event in safety.

“From feedback we have received, we know that the vast majority of attendees enjoyed both the display and the hospitality that Broadstairs' wonderful cafes, bars, and restaurants have to offer.

“We will consider all the comments we receive and implement improvements where possible should next year’s event be approved.”
