Henry’s electronic store in Margate High Street set to become new pub

A former electronics store based on a high street for almost 90 years could be turned into a new pub.

Proposals have been submitted to convert the former Henry's store in Margate High Street into a pub which will also be selling hot food.

Henry's sold cameras, hoovers and batteries before the business ceased trading in October 2017 with the premises remaining empty ever since.

However, an application submitted to Thanet District Council (TDC) could see the building brought back to life.

Although no brewery has been mentioned in documents put forward with the proposal, the applicant behind the plans is Colin Barber.

The 55-year-old set up a private company called The Old Henry's in July 2024 alongside fellow owner Philip Andrew Evans.

Information submitted with the plans says the name 'Henry's' would return to the site should the application be given the green light.

It says: "Henry’s at number 52 is a building many people that were born or have lived in Thanet for a number of years will remember, hence wanting to continue trading under ‘Henry’s’ as well as wanting to honour Henry’s name for his inventions and skill as an engineer during the war years.

"There is no proposed change to the front entrance apart from the repainting which will be in keeping with the adjacent buildings.

"We would also keep the frames white in keeping with surrounding window frames and add a Juliette balcony, made of metal railing and painted black in keeping with the surrounding railings.

"The building has been closed for over seven years and we are keen to give it a new lease of life as an old-fashioned pub with a great view of the sunset.

"The changes we propose are minimal with extremely little impact on the surrounding area."

Henry’s opened in 1932 as a radio construction firm under the ownership of Denis ‘Henry’ Poupard.

An electrical engineer, he had worked on the then-secret radar technology before deciding to focus on electrical retail in Thanet after the Second World War.

His son Julian Poupard became a partner of the business in the 1960s selling items such as TVs and following the death of his father, ran the store alongside his wife Sheila.

But when Mr Poupard fell ill aged 80 in 2027, the shop closed.

Should the plans to convert it into a pub be rubber-stamped, 10 employees would be given jobs at the 150sq m site.

The watering hole would also trade from 9am until 11.30pm seven days a week.

Meanwhile, an accessible toilet is proposed for the ground floor.

A decision on the application is expected by May 26.
