ROGER Gale is beginning his 23rd year as the MP for North Thanet after holding his seat.
Mr Gale won with a majority of 7,634 over his closest rival, Labour candidate and district councillor Iris Johnston.
Before the result was announced Mr Gale said he and his team of canvassers have covered between 10 to 15 miles a day visiting local residents.
"The doorstep reaction was very positive, on the whole people are not rude and have been welcoming us," he said.
Mr Gale seemed confident and in good spirits as he circulated around Margate Winter Gardens and despite the late arrival of the result, 5.15am, had plenty of energy to enjoy the victory with his family and large group of supporters.
In his acceptance speech he thanked his team and singled out his wife and 'soul mate' Suzie and said without her support he would not be able to continue.
Mr Gale quashed rumours that he was thinking of standing down and said: "It has been suggested that the people of Thanet want a change but I’m grateful that they didn’t show that at the polling stations.
"I have every intention of going on as long as my health and mind manage and I have a very strong want to do so," he said.
After his speech Mr Gale received an emotional greeting from his family and took a few minutes to be with them before allowing journalists to speak to him.
He said: "I think anybody can see that the Conservatives have made real progress in this election."
He added that their task now was "to challenge a dreadful Government in the decisions it makes".
"I believe the credibility of the Prime Minister has been challenged and when we get back to Westminster we have a real job to do," he said.
Mr Gale’s closest rival was the well known Cllr Iris Johnston who hinted after her defeat that she may not consider standing in a General Election again.
"I will continue with my role as a district councillor and continue to be there for the people who need me but I will have to discuss the rest of my political future with my family," she said.
