A major road is set to be closed for the next three weeks so urgent repairs can be carried out to a gas main.
The A254 Ramsgate Road, near the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, has been shut off after SGN engineers discovered gas leaks at a point where teams were previously upgrading the network.
The closure came into force yesterday at 8pm, and the road is shut in both directions between its junctions with Salmestone Road and St Augustine’s Avenue.
“We’ve liaised closely with Kent Highways on the need for this urgent road closure to ensure everyone’s safety while we investigate the source of increased gas readings,” SGN bosses say.
“This closure is expected to be in place for approximately three weeks.
“Our engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to replace these old metal mains with new plastic pipe, which will ensure local properties can enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
“We understand roadworks can be frustrating for residents and motorists.
“We'd like to thank the Margate community for your continued patience while we work to ensure everyone stays safe and warm.”
The company has been due to start the final phase of its project close to the Star Lane roundabout, but this work will now need to be replanned.
A diversion route is in place to allow access to the hospital. Drivers should follow the A254 Ramsgate Road to A254 Margate Road, A256 Westwood Road, A255 Dane Court Road, A255 St Peters Road, B2052 College Road and vice versa.
Nash Court Road will also be closed at its junction with A254 Ramsgate Road. The alternative route is via Nash Court Road, Nash Lane and vice versa.
