A serious crash closed a busy road near a Kent shopping centre.
Eyewitnesses told of a “significant” accident in Margate Road, close to Westwood Cross in Broadstairs.
A woman working in the area told KentOnline she came across the scene in the immediate aftermath of the collision.
She said: “I could see one fire engine and three ambulances.
“One car was completely crumpled at the front.
“It looked like a very significant accident.”
It was also reported that a helicopter – understood to be an air ambulance – landed near the scene.
A police spokesman told KentOnline: “Kent Police was called at 1.54pm to reports of a serious collision.
“Officers are currently at the scene with South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Delays are expected in the area and drivers are advised to use alternative routes where possible.”
Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called at 1.55pm “to assist other emergency services”, with two fire engines sent to the crash site.
The A254 Margate Road was closed for several hours but reopened overnight.
