Huge fly-tipping mess forces closure of Park Road in Birchington, Thanet

A probe has been launched after a massive fly-tip of building waste forced a road to close.

Bags of slate, cladding, insulation and furniture were discovered strewn across Park Road, Birchington, yesterday shortly after 7.30am.

After the route was shut for Thanet District Council to clear the mess, the authority appealed to anyone who has recently had building work done and recognise the items.

“If you recognise any of the rubbish in the photos, and had paid to have it cleared, please get in touch on streetscene.enforcement@thanet.gov.uk,” they said.

“All information will be received in confidence.”

Flat roof bitumen and soil were among the rubble, according to the authority’s Facebook appeal, which came accompanied with a series of photos.

Earlier this month, KentOnline reported on a fed-up farmer who was left paying thousands of pounds to continually clear up fly-tipping on his land.

David Figgis, of Hernhill near Faversham, says this year alone he has seen sofas, windows, insulation and builder’s rubble and metal discarded on the roads on the outskirts of the market town.

The latest offence was a pile of asbestos, dumped on land next to his farm just off the A299 Thanet Way heading towards the countryside villages of Fostall and Dargate – though the area is public property.
