A serial burglar has been jailed for two years after his blood was found at the scene of a crime.
Louis Sheehan, 33, of Prospect Place in Broadstairs, pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court to burglary of a dwelling and failing to attend a previous hearing.
The court heard how in July last year Sheehan smashed the front window of an address in Booth Place and stole thousands of pounds worth of electrical items, as well as jewellery and clothing.
On July 10 Sheehan was arrested by police for an unrelated matter and was found to have the same Blackberry phone stolen in the Margate burglary four days earlier. Analysis of the blood left at the scene led to a positive match to Sheehan.
Sheehan also admitted two other burglaries in Broadstairs High Street.
He admitted kicking the window of the Bootique shop in September to gain entry and stole ladies’ clothing and accessories, as well as a stereo and about £800 in cash.
And in October he smashed a window at Francesca Hair Salon, taking about £500 cash from a till.
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Neil Watford, of Kent Police, said: “Sheehan targeted an unoccupied property, giving little or no regard to his actions and the lasting effect burglary would have had on his victim.
“With developments in forensic science, we were able to provide a DNA match while building a strong case which left Sheehan with no other choice than admit his crimes.
“There is no doubt Sheehan picked out this address because the owner was away. Taking some simple steps to protect your property when at work or on holiday can reduce the chances of you becoming a victim.
“Using an automatic timer switch to turn interior lights and a radio on and off can give the impression someone is at home, while any climbing aids, such as empty bins, should be removed from sight to prevent burglars gaining easy access.”
