A trio of Kent fish and chip shops have been named among the best in the UK.
Establishments in Ramsgate, Folkestone and Ashford made it into Fry Magazine’s top 50 best takeaway chippies, with judges looking at the quality of food, cleanliness and staff expertise, as well as other factors.
After two mystery visits, Newington Fish Bar in Ramsgate scored a whopping 99% out of 100, and owner Nigel Derrett is delighted with the recognition. The chippy also made the cut last year.
He said: “Our team and staff are honoured to once again made it into the top 50 best shops in the UK. We pride ourselves on the quality of our food and service which shines through to the customers and keeps them coming back.”
Sandy’s Fish and Chip shop in Folkestone made their debut on the list this year, scoring 97%.
The mystery diner particularly praised the delicious chips and friendly and efficient service.
Owner Andy Burnett thinks sticking to a traditional menu has paid off and led to their success.
He said: “It’s such an honour to make the list, especially as there is such a high standard across this industry, and to make the top 50 the first time entering is amazing.
“It means so much to our business to be rated amongst the best country and to be one of the only three winners in Kent.
“I put our success down to having a traditional fish and chip shop menu, where we concentrate on providing quality fish and chips.
“We work closely with our fantastic suppliers to create a perfect meal for our customers.”
Catch in Ashford is also recognised in the top 50.
Reece Head, competition organiser, praised all the establishments which made up the list.
He said: “Despite the formidable challenges posed by inflationary pressures that have affected every aspect of the industry, these remarkable establishments continue to deliver top-quality fish and chips using the finest ingredients.”
