JD Wetherspoon pub Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate set to shut for revamp

The county’s busiest JD Wetherspoon pub is set to shut for a refurbishment.

The Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate, which can hold up to 1,400 people, will closed its doors tomorrow (November 11) for nearly a month.

A sign recently appeared in the massive former concert hall, considered Britain’s biggest Spoons, saying: “Wetherspoon refurbishment at Royal Victoria Parade.

“This pub will be closed from Monday 11 November, reopening on Saturday 7 December 2024.

“We apologise for any inconvenience – your nearest Wetherspoon pub: The Mechanical Elephant, Marine Terrace, Margate.”

Following the pub giant’s £4.5m renovation between 2016 – 2017, the boozer has often received praise for its stunning location – with the rear of the property opening out to the beach.

Earlier this year, it was rated as the second-best ‘Spoons’ in the country in a list created by Q.R. Code Generator.

Located in Harbour Parade, JD Wetherspoon took over the Grade-II listed building, with a grand opening in August 2017.

Designed by architect Stanley Davenport Adshead in 1903, the formerly derelict pavilion had stood empty for nine years before Tim Martin’s firm took over.

Before the revamp it was a casino which closed in 2008 and suffered fire damage in 2011.

Now, it features two floors and two bars, a ground-floor beachfront beer garden, and a first-floor roof terrace.

Spoons fanatic David Bingham – who spent four years enjoying the “longest pub crawl in history” – admitted last year the Royal Victoria Pavilion had been the best one he had been to.

And when KentOnline reporter Rhys Griffiths took on the mammoth task of visiting all the Kent branches in the space of a weekend, he also spoke glowingly of the bar.

The chain has been contacted for more information about the refurbishment.
