Protests against ‘lads’ mags’ have taken place outside a Tesco supermarket in Thanet.

Organised by feminist charities, protests were held across the country. Campaigners hoped to convince Tesco stores to lose ‘lads’ mags’ - such as Zoo Bizarre and Nuts - altogether.

The campaigners claim these magazines are dangerous and a first or second route into abuse. They claim magazines and the internet make the sexualisation of women and young girls and boys too easily available to the general public.

They chose Tesco because it is the largest retailer in the UK.

Diane Middleton led the demonstration at Tesco Extra, in Westwood Cross, Broadstairs.

Ms Middleton said: “The protest went very well, I was very pleased, there are more than 100 signatures on the petition.

“I thought Tesco might come and move us on but staff were very respectful.

“There was a lot of interest, especially from young people , and lots of them totally agreed with what we were trying to achieve.”

The protest was part of a national campaign organised by UK Feminista which also saw demonstrations in London, Glasgow and other major cities.

Ms Middleton, of Princes Crescent, Margate, said: “Our argument is these magazines are freely available among the cornflakes and fruit; they are degrading to women and they are dehumanising."

Tesco has said it has struck a deal with the publishers to tone down the front covers.
