Stephen Merchant has broken free from The Office and gone back to his comic stand-up roots to prove he is not joined at the hip with co-writer Ricky Gervais.
The popularity of the highly-rated TV series was followed by increasing recognition for Merchant, when the two teamed up again for a further smash hit BBC show – Extras.
Since then the 6ft 7in comic has enjoyed solo success in Hollywood with the film Hall Pass, appearing with Owen Wilson.
Merchant’s star is rising but the road has not been quite as smooth in his quest for a woman to share in his fame and fortune – and that’s where Hello Ladies, the title of his first solo stand-up tour, comes in.
It’s a gentle hint from Merchant, the master of self-deprecating humour, at the need for female company.
The bespectacled Bristolian – who is an Emmy, Bafta and Golden Globe winner – has apparently not been inundated with offers.
The Hello Ladies tour arrives at the Winter Gardens, Margate on Tuesday, September 20, when Merchant will share his story.
He said: “Most people don’t realise that I was a stand-up comedian before I met Ricky Gervais,” adding, “Life can be lonely as a TV writer, so this tour is a great opportunity for me to get out there and meet my fans and make at least one of them my wife.”
