Heavy snowfall and snow drifts up to knee height have caused
severe problems in Thanet, with a number of roads shut and scores
of schools closed for the day.

The worst affected routes included the A299 Thanet Way, the
B2050 Manston Road (pictured left) and Manston Court
Road. Hazardous driving conditions were also reporterd on
the A256 Haine Road, with long delays on the A254 Ramsgate
Road near the QEQM hospital, Margate.

There was significant disruption to public transport, with
Southeastern reporting delays and cancellations on many of its
train services across Kent. Local bus operators Stagecoach and
Eastonways were also hit.

Thanet District Council was forced to abandon all waste and recycling collections because the treacherous conditions prevented its fleet of refuse trucks from taking to the roads.

Cllr Shirely Tomlinson, cabinet member for environmental
services, said: "As we've said before, the last thing we want is an
accident and I'm sure residents can understand that. As soon as it
is safe for our teams to go out, they will be back out collecting
again."

Nearly 40 schools in Thanet were also closed to pupils.

The worst of the weather is believed to have passed, although wintry showers are forecast by the Met Office for the remainder of the day.
