Major search after fishing vessel capsizes off Kent coast

One crew member has died and another is still missing after a fishing vessel capsized last night off the Kent coast.

An extensive search was carried out today and one man was rescued from the upturned boat, one was winched from the water but later died in hospital and another has not been found.

The Coastguard teams and rescue helicopter scoured the waters today but the search has now been suspended due to poor light.

Duty controller for the UK Coastguard Kaimes Beasley said: "This has been an extensive and comprehensive search of the area.

"We are standing down the search this evening because of the fading light.

"It is unlikely that the search will resume in the morning, unless we get further information that will help us find the third crew member."

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Lydd, two lifeboats from Ramsgate and the Coastguard Rescue Team from Margate were all sent out earlier today.

A Coastguard spokesman said earlier that the search was concentrating around the area 17 miles north east of the North Foreland, off the coast of Margate.

Mr Beasley said it was not known when the Belgian-registered vessel capsized, but rescuers were called out at 7.30am today.

It comes after the upturned hull was spotted by a passing boat.
