A couple were kidnapped by a man as he fled the scene of a two-car accident at the entrance to Tesco supermarket at Westwood.
As police arrived to deal with the incident in April last year, Anthony Roberts, one of the drivers involved in the accident, went to another car parked at McDonald’s nearby.
Canterbury Crown Court heard how Roberts got into the passenger seat and shouted at the startled couple: “Drive. Put your foot down!”
As the victims, Alexander King and his girlfriend Amy Hawkins, began to get frightened, Roberts, who stank of booze, shouted: “Take me to Deal!”
Mr King said he didn’t want to go there... so the angry hijacker added: “Then, take me to Sandwich!”
The judge heard how Roberts who smelled of alcohol began getting verbally aggressive towards the couple and they feared he might get violent if they refused to obey.
During the journey, Roberts spoke by mobile phone to the mother of his young child saying he had “F***** up.”
At Sandwich he ordered Mr King to stop but before getting out of the vehicle leaned forward and told them: “I know your face and you have never seen me!”
The court heard that despite being “very frightened and intimidated” they returned to the scene of the accident and reported the incident to police officers.
Roberts, of no fixed address, was jailed for two years after admitting two charges of kidnapping.
The court heard how he had had been at the wheel of a car which had crashed outside Tesco and then ran away because he knew he was in breach of his prison licence.
The judge Recorder Rupert Lowe told him: “You are only 26 and you seem to make custody your permanent home.
"I see you have a troubling list of previous convictions and you have now added kidnapping to that list.
“Your victims suffered extreme anxiety as you demanded they drive you to Sandwich. It is clear that they were scared by your demands.”
