Firefighters had to force their way into a smoke-filled flat in Ramsgate to rescue a man inside.
Neighbours called the fire brigade after spotting smoke in flats at St Mildred's Road just after midnight.
The man was checked over by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
It's thought food left cooking unattended was to blame for the blaze.
Crews used a high-pressure hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation fan and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the smoke and fumes.
It happened at 12.04am and was brought under control at around 12.40am.
