A Kent thief is back behind bars after four months on the run.

Adrian Gowers, 46, was arrested at about 10pm by police last night (Wednesday) at an address in Rainham.

He had been serving a seven-year sentence at HMP Hollesley Bay in Suffolk when he was granted a period of temporary release to a Rainham address last November.

However, he did not return and was on the run until last night.

After his arrest he was taken to Medway police station before being sent back to jail.

In October 2007, former builder Gowers was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for a cash machine burglary in Birchington, on the Isle of Thanet in Kent.

He was also convicted of an attempt to steal another cash machine, with a four-year sentence to run concurrently.

Both offences took place on the same night: July 14, 2007.

The HSBC cash machine was stolen with the aid of a digger and a stolen lorry, with £135,000 taken. The Barclays bank in the village was also targeted, without success. Gowers' three accomplices were jailed - and remain there.

• A 44-year-old man from Rainham has been arrested on suspicion of harbouring an offender. He is being questioned by police.
