A Kent MP is making it easier for the public to find out about his expenses despite a High Court bid to keep some details of MPs’ expenses secret.

South Thanet MP Steve Ladyman says public unrest about MPs expenses will not go away and has decided to go public on his website.

The move follows the uproar concerning House of Commons Speaker Michael Martin, who is to spend £100,000 or more on a High Court action to block publication of MPs’ second homes allowance.

Mr Martin would also challenge an order by a Freedom of Information tribunal that 14 current or former MPs should provide a detailed breakdown of their expenses.

Mr Ladyman said: “We need to do more to be open about what we claim and why if we are to restore confidence in the House of Commons.

“Most of the information is already in the public domain if people know where to look for it so I’ve added a section to my website giving more information about my arrangements and linking to all the various places where constituents can find details of what I claim and why.

“The decision by the House of Commons Commission to further challenge the publication under Freedom of Information is understandable in so far as it seeks to restrict the publication of MPs addresses where those MPs are at risk.

"However, they should not go any further in light of current public concern and we have to be more helpful to those members of the public who are interested in these matters. I hope my website now does that.”
