A brutal attack on a schoolgirl was filmed by other youngsters and circulated among friends.

Shocking footage of the assault on the 13-year-old in Margate was later seen by the victim's family.

It shows the attacker punching and kicking the teenager in the head, and dragging her off her bicycle by her hair.

The injured Year 8 pupil's mum says she suffered bumps and bruises and a slap mark to her face during the incident.

When sent the alarming footage, a police spokesperson confirmed officers are investigating reports of an assault near George V Avenue, Margate, on February 7.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the incident," they added.

However, KentOnline understands the video may in fact relate to a separate attack in December.

Kent Police has been asked to clarify its response.

Both pupils attended Hartsdown Academy in Margate.
