FIREFIGHTERS spent about nine hours dealing with 10 tons of timber on fire at a building site off Wilderness Hill, Margate, overnight on Friday.

Police cordoned off the road as thick smoke blew across from the blaze near the junction with Dane Road.

Crews from Margate and Thanet fire stations attended after being called at 9pm. The last team left just before 6am on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The crews were allowing parts of it to burn under control as it was not a life threatening risk. They kept a watching brief."
