The future of historic Northdown House - one of Thanet’s most distinctive landmarks - still remains uncertain.
The Georgian manor could face closure and sell off after it was decreed surplus to needs by Thanet council.
A determined campaign by worried residents attracted a petition with thousands of signatures, and more than a hundred people turned out to discuss future options at a meeting at the property.
Following responses from the council’s consultation earlier this year and subsequent legal advice, residents told of two preferred council options - public use, which could include education, health services, community or charitable usage; or transfer of Northdown House, with additional covenants, to the community itself.
Council officers explained that funding is needed for repairs to the building and to ensure that it is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Thanet council leader Cllr Sandy Ezekiel said: “We’re aware that people don’t want the building to close and the council has listened to that. Unfortunately, the council doesn’t have the resources to meet the high cost of outstanding repairs, so we do need to find a use that will address these issues.
“It was really encouraging to see so many people turning out to give their views.”
A decision about Northdown House will be made by the council’s cabinet early in 2009.
