Parking charges could be reviewed in an effort to encourage more people to shop locally.
Cllr Sandy Ezekiel, leader of Thanet council, said traders had put forward a number of parking initiatives designed to lure more shoppers back to once-thriving retail areas like Margate and Cliftonville.
One proposal looks set to be implemented next month, before the start of the peak summer season.
Cllr Ezekiel said: “Thanet has some of the lowest parking charges in Kent but that doesn’t stop us working on new ideas with the business community.
“We understand that entirely free parking is very attractive - you only have to look at Westwood Cross to see that.
“But keeping our costs to an absolute minimum is the best we can offer and the traders have agreed that this new scheme is an excellent step forward.”
“It’s a little premature to talk about the precise details,” added Cllr Ezekiel, although information about the scheme is likely to be revealed in meetings over the coming weeks.
Thanet council is desperate to revive high streets on the island and last week launched a new publicity campaign to promote the appeal of local stores.
Advertisements could be placed in the local media, highlighting what each shopping district has to offer.
