A developer is hoping to build a brand-new neighbourhood of 1,500 homes near Westwood Cross.
A consultation is to open into plans for the massive new Thanet development, named Humber's Mill, which would also feature a new primary school and 11 hectares – 27 acres – of green space.
Named after an old windmill that once sat on the site, it would be built on 67 hectares – 166 acres – to the west of Nash Road, near Westwood Cross shopping centre, which has been earmarked for residential development by the district council.
The plans are expected to feature "approximately 1,500 homes, a two-form entry primary school, cafes and small shops".
Developer Axis Land Partnerships (ALP) is encouraging local people to explore its proposal ahead of a public consultation which will launch later this month.
Jon Knight, senior project manager at ALP, says: “We want our plans for Humber’s Mill to reflect the needs and aspirations of existing residents, and potential new residents, so that the development can deliver maximum benefit to the community.
“Our online community consultation will start in just a few weeks and we are looking forward to hearing from anyone with views about what they already like about the area, what could be improved, and what they would like to see in a new neighbourhood.
'Tranquil gardens, adventure playgrounds, walking trails, sports and leisure spaces, and a central village green are just some of the features being considered.'
"Community feedback will help shape our proposals for Humber’s Mill as we prepare to submit an outline planning application for the site next year.”
A website has been launched for the development, which says Humber's Mill will be made up of "high-quality homes...surrounded by a variety of new, sensory-rich green and public spaces for people to explore".
It adds: "Humber's Mill tapestry of green spaces will become a key part of its distinct identity.
"Tranquil gardens, adventure playgrounds, walking trails, sports and leisure spaces, and a central village green are just some of the features being considered."
Mr Knight continued: “Our aspiration is for Humber's Mill to be a neighbourhood that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together in an attractive place that provides key community facilities.
“Importantly, Humber’s Mill would also be ‘future-ready’.
"We aim to equip all homes with super-fast broadband supporting the shift towards home-working, and reducing the need to travel - in line with government and local connectivity goals. Cycle paths and new links to public transport would offer sustainable travel options, while electric vehicle charging points would be available across the site.”
ALP's consultation is set to launch at the end of the month, when residents will be able to share their thoughts and ask questions via an online survey.
It will also host an in-person consultation event early next year.
