Phil Stovell's hit-and-run death, in Margate, no longer includes assault probe

Police no longer believe a man who died following a hit-and-run in Margate was attacked before the collision.

Investigating officers were considering the possibility that Phil Stovell, 32, was assaulted in the early of hours of October 7 prior to being hit by a car in Caxton Road, Garlinge.

They arrested two men on suspicion of assaulting the railway worker but the pair have since been released without charge.

The force says it has thoroughly reviewed all available CCTV from the night and made extensive house-to-house inquiries.

Officers are now satisfied Mr Stovell's injuries were not the result of an attack, and are instead focusing on the hit-and-run.

A 40-year-old man arrested at the time on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains under investigation.

Described by friends as a dad who "would go out of his way for anyone", Mr Stovell was flown to hospital by air ambulance on the night of the incident.

However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

A police spokesman said: “Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are continuing with their enquiries into the incident, and a 40-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains under investigation.

“Two other men who were arrested and bailed on suspicion of assaulting the victim have since been released without charge.

"This followed a thorough review of all available CCTV footage and extensive house-to-house enquiries, resulting in officers now being satisfied that the victim’s injuries were not the result of an assault.”
